Try to answer before you turn the card over

Each card has a question on the front. Have a go at answering it before you look at the back.

Q. Does rereading your notes help you remember them? Turn over

Retrieval practice

Not much. Rereading makes the material look familiar, and it's easy to confuse that with knowing it. You'll remember more if you try to recall the answer yourself, even when it's a struggle.

Q. When should you review something you've learned? Turn over

Spacing

After you've started to forget it a little. If recalling it takes some effort, you've left about the right gap.

Q. Is it better to practise one topic at a time, or to mix topics up? Turn over

Interleaving

Mixing them works better. In an exam you have to work out which topic each question is about, and mixed practice gets you used to doing that.

Q. Why say how sure you are before checking an answer? Turn over

Calibration

It shows you where you're overconfident. If you felt sure and still got it wrong, that topic needs more practice than you thought.
